Let's Talk About Anxiety: Educational Video for Kids
How does anxiety show up in the classroom?
In this video, Anxiety Canada's Clinical Counsellor & Educator, Mark Antczak, and members of Anxiety Canada's Youth Network, explore anxiety in a school setting and beyond. Watch to learn information on anxiety and coping strategies to improve youth mental health.
This presentation is intended for student in grades 4-7, but you can apply your new knowledge and coping strategies to all age groups (even adults)! The video covers the basics of anxiety, gratitude, and mindful activities to combat anxiety and worry.
Anxiety Canada created this video for Action Anxiety Day (AAD) to be used during the week of June 10th, but you can use the content year-round to educate students, parents, and peers on how anxiety can show up in the classroom.
During the week of June 5-10, classrooms across Canada celebrate AAD in the following ways:
-Saving time to talk to classrooms about anxiety
-Letting children know that anxiety is normal and can be managed.
-Using our toolkit to facilitate class discussion and activity.
-Encouraging students to wear blue and orange to show support for AAD.
Action Anxiety Day (AAD) is dedicated to anxiety awareness and education, as well as reducing the stigma around anxiety disorders. As educators, school administrators, and parents, you have a unique opportunity to create a safe and supportive space for students, especially when it comes to their mental health.
Anxiety is common for many children, and we can empower them with knowledge and the tools they need to cope. Share our resources widely to help reduce shame around mental health and give children the tools they need to cope early.
Mark Antczak explains why it's important to teach children about anxiety: “When you educate youth about anxiety and the way it presents, you’re ensuring that they don’t feel alone in their struggles, and you’re giving them hope. Early childhood education about mental health allows the anxiety to be addressed earlier, preventing more severe symptoms that can occur if left untreated."
Mark's message for youth and children is: “The intense feelings that you’re struggling with right now are normal, you’re not to blame, and they won’t last forever because you can get help in many different ways.” Learn some of the ways in our toolkit.

I can cope while using humor, but when someone tries to have a conversation with me, anxiety creeps in and I only give a short response. Plus, I constantly worry whether or not I offended someone or if other people talking negatively about me.

I struggled with germaphobia OCD for years. It got so bad I stopped all intimacy interactions, even kissing. This further caused isolation as I became single and stayed that way for over ten years. Then the pandemic came and made it worse! To this day in near 2024, I do not touch doorknobs without napkins, I have asked coworkers to not come too close to me while I’m in my office space (my boss loves to come close and pick nose, ears, talk over my coffee cup on my desk etc. I’m convinced it’s being done spitefully). At work, they all now talk about me behind my back as the office weirdo. I stay indoors all weekend, and now only cook at home. It’s getting to be a social issue.

I hung out outside of school with a friend only one time in my life… we went bowling and then to chick fil a and McDonald’s for ice cream😂… I felt comfortable around her BUT she invited her friends…. So I was just awkward for most of the time on my iPod pretending to be busy 😅 and I had no wifi and no games to play 😅 Ughhh I wanted to go home so bad I never hung out with anyone after that experience… I was over it 🙄

I can talk but only when someone talks to me or asks a question…. Mg problem is not being about to socialize and make friends because I never know what to talk about on my own In School there’s always reasons to be around kids and talk.. like if your working on a project or the teacher addresses you to answer a question or something….. but being able to talk to kids all on my own without any reason is hard… I have no idea how to hang out with people… I always needed an excuse to talk to people or hang out in school I had some friends here and there but I never hung out with them outside of school because I wouldn’t know what to do…. School was my social life… outside of school there was no excuse to be around kids my age :(

I just realized that I have germophobia as well. I'm not only sensitive to germs, but I'm also sensitive to artificial, synthetic, or harmful chemicals and artificial or synthetic food dyes that can create permanent stains on my clothes if they touch them. I'm so scared of getting close to these things.

I struggle as I have kids-they cannot bring anything in the house without me disinfecting it and their school bags are on a washable mat by the front door. As soon as they get home they have a bath and put on clean clothes. It's a nightmare and so exhausting.
